ASSAULT ON A CITIZEN.

ROW IN A CHINAMAN’S SHOP,

What appears to have been an assault of a serious nature was committed on Mr and Mrs Fernandos at a late hour on Saturday night. Mr and Mrs Fernandos went into the shop of Sing On Kee, fruiterer, shortly after 11 o’clock for the purpose of buying some fruit. Mrs Fernandos, not being served to her satisfaction, remonstrated with the Chinaman, Sing On Kee, and a few hot words were exchanged. Then, it is alleged, the man struck Mrs Fernandos, whereupon her husband went to her assistance. He, however, received a severe blow on the cheekbones, and another I Chinaman, Sing Yung Kee, then also took part in the row and commenced throwing bottles, the result being that Mr Fernandos received a blow on the head, and his wife was struck heavily on the arm. One of the witnesses of the incident, Mr J. McLeod, states that he saw one of the Chinese strike Fernandos on the arm with i bottle, and immediately afterwards he law the other Chinaman throw an iron weight, weighing about 31b or 41b, which lit Fernandos on the cheek between the ear and eye. This was followed by one of the men throwing a smaller weight, which hit Fernandos lower down on the

face. Fernandos was by that time in a fainting condition, and was removed to hi 6 home, adjoining. Subsequently the two Chinese were identified by Mr Fernandos as the men who had committed the assault upon him, and they were taken into custody by Constables McLeod and O'Halloran, and lodged in the Central Police Station cells.
