During December last the Department of Labour assisted a total of 122 “ unemployed,” of whom 16 were domestic servants. The occupations that bulked most largely were : —Labourers, 63 ; and carpenters, 28. The numbers assisted in the different districts were:—Auckland, 24; Wellington North, 1; Wellington South, 45 ; Marlborough and Nelson, 13 ; South Canterbury, 3; Westland, 8; Dunedin, 6: Southland, 6. Strango to say, North Canterbury is altogether absent from the return.
