His name is William Bartlett, and he is now 57 years of age. In 1870, while undergoing a term of 10 years for burglary, he effected his escape in a remarkable way. His cell was in the centre of the prison, and by means of a chisel made from a pail handle, he forced stones from the wall and crawled in to a ventilating shaft, which ran right through the building. Arriving at the main wall of the building, he forced some more stones from their position, and by means of a rope, made from his sheets, he dropped to the ground. He contrived to elude the sentinels, and mounted the outer walls, and got safely away among the quarries. There he remained in hiding six days, and then swam to the mainland. His next step was to break into a clergyman's house and attire himself in clerical clothes. He was arrested picking blackberries, a constable noticing that ho was wearing prison socks. He received a sentence of eight years when he was captured. In September last lie was released on license from prison, where he had agaijibeen confined for burglary. He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment for failing to report his address to the police.
