As the Rotorua was detained here last week adjusting compasses, her departure for Picton and Nelson was postponed until midnight. Her engine department is in charge of Mr Davidson, formerly of the Brunn'or, who is assisted by Mr Budge, lato of the Rotomahana, as second, and Mr Sadler, formerly of the Coriuna, as third. Mr D. Smith is purser, and Mr Robertson, lato second steward of the Monowai, has been promoted to chief steward of the Rotorua. The names of the deck officers have already appeared.

The local agents have b?en advised that tha Otarama, which left tho Bluff on August 19th, arrived at London on Sunday last. Messrs Salter (late second engineer of the Australia), T. McKenzie (third engineer of the Rotoiti) and Richardson (engineer of the Huia) have all passed their examinations for chief engineers' certificates before the Inspector of Machinery. Messrs Bonnor and Brophy, chief officers of the Herald and Janet Nicoll respectively, are to exchange ships. Until this is arranged Mr Lucas, late chief officer of the Maori, is acting on the Herald.

Captain Spence is in charge of the Janet Nicoll, Captain Ryan having remained behind at Lyttelton to undergo a sight test.

A wharf is at present in course of erection at Cowes' B:iy, Waiheke, Auckland, which will ho a great conveni nee to visitors to that part of the island. The wharf is to be COOft long, with a tee at the outer end 40ft by 22ft, and there will be Bft of water at the end at low tide. The wharf is being constructed by the Northern Steamship Company, who have a large staff of men employed on the work.

Tho Tyser liner Indramayo is due at Wanganui about the 20th instant, and will there ship equal to K)QO carcases from the Wanganui Freezing Company, in addition to wool, tallow and pelts. The barque Pass of Leny, chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, has been ordered to proceed from Lyttelton to Gisborne to load wool, &c , for-London. The barque Liv, now at Dunedin, will load for London at Lyttelton under the same auspices.

Several trips across the Atlantic have been made by a Captain William Andrews in a 13ft boat. He recently started from Atlantic City, New Jersey, on one of these expeditions in his small craft, and anticipated reaching London in £0 or CO days 'rom departure. His boat is 13ft Din long, sft 4in beam and 22in deep, and has a lead keel weighing 3001 b. It is so constructed that it can bo folded up to facilitats conveyance when ashore. Its sails measure 15 square yards. The water supply ds carried in bottles, and Andrews has on board food enough to last him for three months. He is making the voyage quite alone.

The ship Yaliaroi, which arrived at Sydney from London, spoke the Norwegian barque Liv, bound from Hamburg to Dunedin, on August 17th in 30 6. 2927 W. This vessel has a quantity of transhipments for Wellington. Tho steamer Express, purchased by-Captain Widerstrom for the Hawke's Bay Trawling Club, arrived at Napier from Sydney on Wednesday, after an 11 days' passage. Fears were entertained for her safety, but her lengthy trip was occasioned by the fierce north-westerly gale which prevailed in Cook Strait at the beginning of the week, the little steamer having to seek shelter on Guard's Bank from Saturday until Tuesday last. Her dimensions are : Length, 77ft Cin; breadth of beam, 16ft Sin ; depth of hold, 7ft sin, anl is cf 56 tons register. Her oomponnd engines are of 40 horse-power, and her cylinders are 12in and Ilia in diameter, with a speed of eight knots per hour. She draws Oft aft and 2ft forward, and is in every way adapted for the business for which she was purchased. The steamer constructed for Lake Te Anau by the Dunedin Foundry and Engineering Company is being sent up to the lake in sections, where it will be fitted together on an improvised slip. The leviathan liner Gothic arrived from Dunedin Thursday morning, having added considerably to her cargo for Home both at that port and Lyttelton. She will receive equal to 40,000 carcases here, including three loads from the Aramoho Freez ng Works, Wanganui, to be brought down by the Huia. The Pukaki will range alongside the ocean steamer this morning and supply her bunkers with 1000 tons of Westport coal.

The brigantine Aratapu, which has been off the Heads since Tuesday, arrived Thursday morning, and was towed to and berthed at Jervois quay. She left Tairua on the sth inst., and encountered a heavy westerly gale off Hawke's Bay, lasting for three days, which threw the little vessel out of her course. She arrived off the Heads on Tuesday afternoon, but, owing to the fresh north-westerly gale, was blown away to the south as far as Cape Campbell, when the wind veered round to the south, enabling her to make port. The Aratapu has 100,000 ft of timber, consigned to Messrs Stewart and Co. She is now in charge of Captain Gilmer, her late commander, Captain Savident, having left for England on a holiday trip. The barque Akaroa was towed into the stream by the tug Duco Thursday, and providing tho wind be favourable will sail for Port Chalmers this morning. It is not improbable that the Akaroa will load at Wellington for London. The ship Pleiades arrived at Napier from Nelson on Thursday evening. She has a quantity of original cargo to put out, and will then load wool, tallow, &c, for London. Messrs Levin and Co. are advised that the Pakeha arrived at London on Thursday morning last with her meat in good condition. The Mararoa, from Sydney via North, had 225 tons of cargo for Wellington and 385 tons for through ports (inoluding 890 pieces of timber for Dunedin). She look in here about 80 tons of scenery belonging to the Pollard Opera Company and a quantity of transhipments from the Kaikoura. Mr Wilson, second officer, having left the steamer at Sydney to put in his naval reserve drill on the Mildura, the third and fourth officers have been advanced a step. » Mr A. J. Glasgow, late cf the Wanaka, and Mr Hamilton, third engineer of the Hesketh, have both passed their examinations for a second engineer's certificate. Mr Williamson, late of the Corinna, is now chief engineer of the Brunner, in place of Mr Davidson, transferred to the Rotorua. Mr Salter, who passed his examination for a ohief's certificate the other day, is second engineer, Mr C. Johnson, late chief engineer of the Wakatipu, is at present on holjday leave at Auckland. The local agents received advice from headquarters 12st week that the cargo steamer Tekoa, which put into Capetown on the 10th inst. with her cargo afire, is expected to resume her voyage to Wellington via Bcaconsfleld (Tasmania) on -the oth. The Mana had a lively experience on her last trip to Patea. Leaving port last Monday Bhe bad to seek shelter from t}-e severity of th-? gale under

Kapiti, leaving again on Wednesday. On arrival off Patea tho bar was found to be unworkable, so after standing off for 24 hours she returned to Wanganui to await an improvement in weather ard channel. An entranco was effected at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning, the steamer leauing on the return trip the same night, and arriving here on Sunday morning. As we surmised, the barque Clan McLeod, at present lying in the stream, has been chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company to load wool, etc., for London. Th 3 barque Natal Queen has been chartered to load timber at Mercury Bay for Wellington, leaving here for Kaipara to load for Hobart. THE VANCOUVER SERVICE. The Canadian-Australian liner Aorangi, arriving here at 11 a.m. on the 12ih. completed the trip from Sydrey in tlu-ee days 20 hours, a very good performance She left Port Jackson at 130 p.m. on Saturday, and experienced fine weather with southerly aud south-westerly winds on the run across. The passengers for Now Zealand were—Misses Hensley, Udy, Messrs Baker, Hould, Meares, Worrnaid, Reid, Goddard, Matheson, Nicholson, Rose, Moore, Aheame, Withors, Chapman. Dodd, Fitzroy, Hammond, Mackay (2), Rowdon, McLeod, Kingswell, Teague, and 83 for other ports. The Aorangi has 810 tons of general cargo (including 9000 cases of fruit) to discharge here, and has a full cargo for through ports. Sho receives 400 tons of Black Ball cokl from the Hesketh and resumed her voyage to Suva, Honolulu and Vuncouver at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The mailboat Aorangi left for Suva, Honolulu and Vancouver shortly after 3 o'clook Thursday afternoon, Pilot Shilling taking command until the steamer was clear of the wharf. Passengers booked in New Zealand were:—Misses Guilliard, Boscawen, Holdsworth, Mcsdaraes Wilson and family (5), Barker, Ashcroft and 2 children, Messrs Payne, Campbell. Her outward cargo consisted of about 100 tons, principally produce and frozen m^at. The Canadian - Australian mailboat Miowera, from Vancouver, via Victoria, Honolulu and Suva, arrived in the stream at 7.40 on Sunday morningone day behind time-table date. The inspection by tho Health Officer (Dr James) proving satisfactgfy, the liner was berthed at Jervois quay at 9.15 a.nffby Captain Johnson (harbourmaster). We are indebted to the purser (Mr Humphries) for the following report of the voyage :—The Miowera left Victoria, British Columbia, at 7.52 a.m. on the 23rd September, arriving at Honolulu at 12 80 p.m on the 30th. Left again at 2 48 a.m. on the Ist October, crossed the equator about 7 p.m on the sth, passed Alofa Island on the Bth, arriving in Suva after a fine-weather passage at 2.30 p.m. on the 10th. The voyage was continued at G. 36 a.m. the next day, Portland Island being passed at 0.26 a.m. on the 15th, the vessel entering the Heads at 6 52 on Sunday morning. Moderate and light southerly winds and fine weather wore experienced on the Tun from Suva to Wellington. The following are the passengers that leave the steanship at this port:—Miss6s Young, Morton, Cooper, Sackville-West, Me?dames Morton, Norton, Litchfield, Batger and child, Cottio, Dr Hosking, Hon Spencer Lyttelton, Colonel Hon SackvilleWest, Lieutenant-Colonel Gorton, Meßsrs Duthie, Mackenzie. Dewing, Hervey, Morton (2), Lichfield, Read Casey, Watson, Dunn, Hamilton, and 2 Indians. There are GO through passengers. Her freight for Wellington consists of 530 tons (including 1515 bunches of bananas, 1412 cases fruit and 4PO casks beer), and she has on board 1400 tons for Bydney. The vessel's late arrival is attributable to the fact that she wa3 about seven hours behind time in leaving Victoria, owing to oho mail being delayed, and was detained for some time at Suva, as the coal hulks were engaged in coaling the German warship Bussard. The R.M.S. Warrimoo, bound to Vancouver, was passed at 7.14 a.m. on the 30th ult. The Miowera resumed her voyage to Fydney at 9 o'clock on Monday morning, a start having been made to discharge her inward cargo at midnight on Sunday. The only passengers booked here were Captain Ward, Major Madocks and Mr Chapman. The next mailboat to arrive from Vancouver is the Warri.noo.due here on November 12th. NEWCASTLE COAL FOR WELLINGTON. The barque Dilpussund, 530 tons, Captain Richards, which has been engaged in the intercolonial trade for some time, but has>not yet visited Wellington, has .been chartered to load coal at Newcastle for Wellington. She will bring about 800 tons, which is consigned to Mr Samuel Brown, the well-known merchant. S.S. GERTIE. Messrs J. Horsley and Co.'s (Wanganui) twinscrew steel steamer Gertie, which has experienced a series of mishaps and delaj'3 since leaving Port Natal some months ago, arrived at Wanganui yesterday week with a load of Newcastle coal. She is to be employed principally in the coal trade between Wanganui and Westport. but will as occasion requires make trips to Wellington. Her twin screws should make hor a very handy vessel in negotiating the bars. THE COROMANDEL, The Coromandel oamc off the Patent Slip on Monday morning, and is now berthed alongside the Railway Wharf, over the spot where she lay submerged for over two years. While out of the water the holes were patched up, the bottom scraped and a liberal coat of tar applied, with the result that the vessel is now perfeotly watertight. There ia still another 100 tons of coal to discharge, on the accomplishment of which she will bo ballasted and towed to an anchorage in the stream. These arrangements are subject to alteration providing a suitable offer is made for taking over the vessel. The Coromandel could, with little cost, be made an excellent floating magazine or kerosene ship. THE INDRAMAYO. The Tyser liner Indramayo arrived In port from London via Australia, Auokland, Gisborne and Napier on Monday morning, and was berthed at the Queen's Whafrf, where she discharges over 600 tons of original cargo. Since last voyage Messrs Downey and Steel, second and third officers respectively, have been replaced by Messrs Ryan »nd Taylor,

The Indramayo discharged over 2000 tons of cargo at. Auckland, and shipped the following freight for London :—SO sacks pelts and tallow, 26 cases coffee, 255 casks she'll, 9 do vanilla, 13 sacks vanilla, 1792 oaßes gum, 95 bales wool. 17 do leather. At Gisborne she received 5828 carcases sheep, 1676 quarters beef, 1287 pieces, 103 bales wool, 36 casks tallow. The liner leaves for the Wanganui roadstead this afternoon, where she will be tendered by the Wanganui Freezing Company's tender Thistle. Her freight r frbm that port consists of 7000 carcases, besides wool, tallow, pelts, &c. From Wanganui she proceeds to Napier to oomplete her loading, calling at Wellington finally for a small quantity of general cargo and bunker coal. Captain East, the Tyser Company's superintendent, was a passenger from Napier. RUAPEHU, FOR NEW ZEALAND. The following passengers for New Zealand had booked by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamship Ruapehu up to September 10th : Saloon: Misses Holden, McMillan, Mesdames Bowman, Temple. Jaggard, Captain Temple, Mr Bowman. Second saloon: ■ Misses Collier (2), Piatt, Wright, Campbell, Hickinbotham (2), Mesdames Piatt, Hickinbotham, Scott and family, Rogers, Pyle, Hawkins, Searle, Collier, Piatt (2), Rev Collier, Messrs Piatt. Carmichael, Hawkins, Campbell, Blythe, Searle, Crewe (3), Denny, Hickinbotham, Bedford, White, Cheeseman, Rogers, Masters Collier (4), Pyle, Hiokenbotham. Steerage for Wellington : Miss Simpson, Messrs Irvine, Rowe, Seymour, Walton, Lawrence, Shepherd, Murray, and 40 for other ports. The Ruapehu left London on September 18th and Capetown on October 13th, the latter Bailing being five days behind time-table date.
