THE PREMIER AND LAND PURCHASES
Special to The Mail. Masterton, May 4. A misapprehension has been caused by the report of the deputation to the Premier with respect to land settlement at Masterton yesterday. What Mr Seddon said in reply to the small farmers was that of late the Land Purchase Commissioners had not been a success, and that it was a farce for them to recommend the Government to offer £o an acre less for agricultural land when the same had been assessed by the Government Land Valuing Department at .£6 per acre less than the owner's own value, and upon which he had been paying land tax. The result was t hat the number of estates bought was less than it otherwise would have been. The Commissioners erred on the right side in the interest of those who were to go on the land, but at the same time people wo e not patriotic enough to sell their land to the Government at less than its marketable value.
