I Auckland, May 10. A fire broke out this afternoon in a brick workroom at the back of a shop in George street, occupied by Messrs R. Dunne and Co., picture frame-makers. The room was gutted. The frame, mouldings, &c, were insured in the Phoenix office for .£l5O. Mr Dunne estimates his loss at double that amount. After boring for coal for 12 months in various parts, Messrs Russell and Brewer have succeeded in finding coal at a depth of 85ft in a swamp at the back of Mackenzie's Hill, Kawakawa. John Randall (who had pleaded guilty) and John Higgins were convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment, with bard labour, besides being ordered to pay the costs of the proceedings. Mr Kippenbertrer gave notice of appeal in the case of Higgins, ho was charged in conjunction with Randall, but who alleged that he had no partnership with him.
