GALLANTEY OF THE SPANIARDS. THE F.LTIUEE OF THE PHILIPPINES. Washington, May 9. The report that the American cruiser Cincinnati was ashore at Deinas has proved to be incorrect. Fuller details of the battle of Manila indicate remarkable gallantry by the Spaniards. General Gomez, the Cuban rebel leader, welcomes the military alliance with the United States, and says that if supplied with munitions of war the Cuban rebels would be able to finish off the Spaniards. Admiral Dewey has offered, on behalf of the United States Government, to administer the government of the Philippine Islands through the present Spanish authorities if acts of war are avoided. He realises that it would ba impossible to trust the insurgents, who were reported to be helping him in the formation of a Provisional Government. New York, May 9. The Neio York Herald advocates that instead of disposing of the Philippines the Government should retain the group, which would be useful as a naval base in fcha Far East.
