ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.

Christchurch, February 7. In the General Synod this evening the whole sitting was occupied by a debate on the second reading of the Bishop of Dunedin’s bill for the appointment of assistant Bishops and for defining their powers. It provided for the appointment of an assistant Bishop in any diocese vesting in the Bishop of the diocese subject to the concurrence of the Diocesan Synod. The assistant was to have no jurisdiction, but to be under the direction of the Diocesan Synod, and was not to have a seat in the House of Bishops, or voice in the confirmation of Diocesan Bishops, or any right of succession to sees. The Rev H. P. Cowie seconded the motion for the second reading. Dean Fitchett opposed it at length. The second reading was negatived on division—Ayes: Bishops, 1 j clergy, 6 j laity, 3. Noes: Bishops, 6 $ clergy, 11; laity, 17. The annual meeting of Sfc. Paul’s Mission Guild was held in the choir vestry on Tuesday, the Rev T. H. Sprott in the chair. The net receipts from the late bazaar amounted toJ>loo 3s 2d, equally divided between the Melanesian Mission and the General Church Fund. The committee and' office-bearers were re-elected for the 4 ensuing year, with the exception of Mrs Harrison, who has withdrawn on account of removal from the parish. Her place is to be filled by Mrs W. Pharazyn, subject to the latter’s consent. The Salvation Army held a reception service last week at the Citadel, Vivian street, in honour of Captain and Mrs Pennington, appointed to the Wellington branoh of the Army from Invercargill. The advertisement summarised the programme as “ Heaven on Earth,” and what with speeches and varied selections of music the Salvationists spent a happy time, as betokened by their enthusiasm and the warmth of their greeting ■ to the new captain. Major and Mrs Birkenshaw were present. In the Anglican churches on Sunday the hymns and sermons were appropriate to Septuagesima Sunday, which has been called. “ the festival of creation.”
