AT THE SIGN OF THE LYRE.
COCK O’ THE NORTH. The following lines, by Mr C. W. Doyle in the San Francisco Chronicle, are based on the fact that “ Cock o’ the North ” was the air played at Dargai by the brave piper Findlater: — O “ Cock o’ the North,” brave “ Cock o’ the North !” They’re telling your deeds from the Tyne to the Forth ; From the sands of the Dee to the wards of Buccleuch The lassies are kissing the laddies for you. In the check at Dargai, when the bravest were spent, And the line of the Ghoorkas was broken and bent, When the Sikhs and the English were stunned by the shock, There rose a great shout for the north-ountry "Cock.” They f >rrned for the charge with a silence sublime, And » prayer in their heart—for the stress of the time; No storm-driven billow e’er surged againßt rock, As on thß wild hil'.tnen our ncrth-country “Cock.” Though the piper was wounded and shot through and through, Yet ho skirled away bravely at “ Bonnets o’ Blue,” At ‘‘The Campbells Are Cornin’,” and —be;t of the flock ! At “ Cock o’ the North O north-country “Cock.” The Ghazis were beaten; their powers ye broke, And their strength was like flax in the heat and the smoke ; They checked and they ran without waiting to mock At the spur and the beak of the north-country “ Cock.” t , Once more have ye proved yourselves sons of your sires; Still burns in your bosoms the flame of their fires ; Once more Caledonia, from mountain to loch, Is weeping for joy of her north-country “Cock.” 0 “Cock o’ the North,” brave “ Cock o’ the ; North ! ’ They’re telling your deeds from the Tyne to the Forth; From the sands of the Dee to the wards of ’ Buccleuch , The lassies are kissing their laddies for you.
