AMERICAN.

Washington, February 1. The House of Eopresentatives rejected, by 182 to 132, Senator Tiller’s resolution in favour of bonds being made payable either in silver or gold. Senator Dingley, in the course of a speech, said the resolution was meant as an attack upon the financial honour of America by the payment of debts in depreciated currency. Washington, February 3. It is reported that Japan has withdrawn her opposition to America annexing the Hawaiian Islands, on condition that the Japanese are granted equal rights with other residents on the Islands. The Senate is indignant at the action of Germany in prohibiting the importation of American fruit on sanitary grounds. It is claimed that the reason assigned for the prohibition is merely a pretext, and that the real desire is to retaliate against the American sugar duties. New York, February 2. A great blizzard is blowing in the Eastern States. The railways and highways are completely blocked by snow. Boston is in an isolated position. i New York, February 3. Further particulars of the blizzard which has swept over the Eastern States show that 33 persons perished along the New England coast. The damage done at Boston amounted to more than 1,000,000 dollars (£200,000). Many fires which have since occurred in towns damaged by the blizzard have remained unchecked in consequence of the wreckage of the alarm system. The falling of the electric wires was responsible for the death of fully 200 horses. New York, February 6. During a fire at Boston six firemen were killed by falling walls, and many others injured.
