THE AUCKLAND SENSATION.
ARREST Otf 'DR ORPEN AT SAN ! FRANCISCO. ■; A cablegram received on Thursday by the Police Department announces the arrest of Dr Orpen, against whom a warrant had been issued in connection with the death of a young 1 woman named Susan McG'allum at Auckland. Auckland, January 22. Detective Maddern left for San Francisco by the R.M.S. Mariposa this afternoon in connection with the extradition of Dr Orpen. January 23. The police have ascertained that Dr Orpen left J 3200 in Auckland. It is anticipated that this amount will be cabled to him to enable him to obtain legal advice and counsel to defend him at the Court proceedings in San Francisco. It has been ascertained that Mrs Orpen conducts a successful massage establishment in London, where her family reside. In 1863 Dr Orpen was connected with the army medical staff in India, and occupied a very responsible position. H© is said to have been on terms of intimacy with several Indian Princes. He arrived , in the colony in 1888, and commenced practice in the following year. He is a native of the County of Kerry, Ireland. '
