GOOD TEMPLAR PICNIC.

Although Good Templars believe in cold water, they are as averse to it when it fails in the shape of rain at a picnic as any other section of the community would be. The drizzling showers detracted very much from the pleasure of the Good Templar picnic held ia Mr Caverhill's grounds at tfelmont on Saturday. Still, the best possible use was made of the dry hours. Eaces were held, and there were various other contests and amusements. About 300 persons were present. They went out in two special trains, and returned in one at about 8 o'clock in the evening. The Mitchelltown Brass Band, under Mr C. B>. James, played selections at the picnic The sports resulted as follow : Boys' Race—J. Smith, 1; J. Cowley, 2 Three-legged Eace —W. Lightfoot and O. Webb. Good Templar Handicap—J Hughes, 1; R. Craig, 2; 0. Webb, 3. Single Laaies' Race —Miss Thomas, 1; Miss Meston, 2. Open Race—W. Jones, 1; T. Emery, 2 ; C Webb, 3. 1.0.G.T. Walking Match—o. Webb. Married Ladies' Race—Mrs Dunn, 1; Mrs Lyon, 2. Stone and Basket Race— W. Jones, 1; C. Webb 2. Bandsmen's Race —Johnson. Girls' Race Carrie Paterson, 1; Nellie Caverhill, 2. Unemployed Eace; prhe, scwfc of coal —T. Hudson, 1; P. Burbush, 2. Sack Rice— Olesen, 1 ; F. Burbush, 2. Half-mile Race —W. Jones, 1; T. Emery, 2. The Tug-of-War was won by Smith's team, representing the Star of Newtown Lodge. A"tocial" in the evening was presided over by Mr G. Petherickj who presented the prizes won at the picnic. Among those who worked bard to make the picnic a success were Mr A. Thompson, the hon secretary, and Mrs Clark and Miss Meston, who had charge of the refreshment booth.
