The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company has offered to rabbit the whole of run No. 130, Marlborough, if given the use of it for the remainder of the year ; but the Land Board is not in favour of the leasing of the run on the terms. A. valuable area of coal has been discovered in the Glen Dim estate, situate about seven miles from Mataura (Otago), and is likely to be developed shortly by a company formed there. A seam of good bituminous coal was discovered by Mr John Nicholson, of Croydon, in December last j year, and since April last several bores have been put down, and these show that an immense body of brown coal, amounting to some millions of tons, exists on the property. The analysis of Mr W. Skey, Government Analysist, shows thai; the coal will prove useful for land engines and household purposes. If the coal is found in workable quantities it must prove of great value to lnvercargiil.
