MASTERTON.
John Lawrence Engel was committed for trial on Thursday on two charges of stealing moneys belonging to Mr W. A. Livcrton, of Tenui. Bail was allowed. A lad named Dixon, employed by. Dixon Bros., cordial manufacturers, met with a peculiar accident last week. He was filling soda bottles, when a bottle burst and a piece flew up, inflicting a severe cut in his throat, and narrowly escaped the severing of the windpipe. The annual meeting of the inhabitants to receive the report of the Trust Lands Trustees was held last week. The report showed the income of the Trust to be nearly ,£9OO a year. Three young men were fined £1 each last week for disturbing the Salvation Army. A violent gale was experienced here on Sunday night. The wind blew in hurricane force, and houses fairly shivered. In several cases ornamental trees were uprooted, and in others fences were blown down. Mr Helyer, the well-known stonemason of Wellington, has prepared the memorial stone for the Masterton Town Hall, which is to be laid on Thursday next. An exciting bolt occurred on Saturday night. A drag was in readiness to convey the Carterton footballers to their homes, when the horses took fright and bolted. Th. 9 only occupant of the conveyance was a small boy, and he was on top of the drag. After proceeding for two or three miles the horses pulled up, fortunately without injuring anybody or anything. There has been a rapid diminution in the number of rabbits in this district during the last few months. The pollard poison has proved most effective. Only about a dozen licenses to shoot game have been taken out in this district this season. The number of shootists, however, who talk about their large bags is far in excess of twelve. There are at present eleven patients in the local Hospital, the whole of whom are progressing satisfactorily.
