New York, May 12. .Mr Spalding, of San Francisco, who was instrumental in arranging the contract to lay tho cable from San Francisco to Honolulu, was unable to obtain tho assistance of the United States Government, and has now withdrawn from the contract. New York, May 15. The action for a divorce brought by Mrs Langtry, the well-known actress, in the Califoraian Courts has proved successful. The petition for tho divorce was granted on the grounds of desertion and want of maintenance. Ottawa, May 14. The United States Government has informed the Government of Canada that there is "no j)rospect of a commercial treaty being concluded between the United States and Canada, inasmuch as Canada is unable
to offer any concessions without Great Britain sharing them. The United States, however, is willing to agree to the appointment of a Commission to enquire into the subject.
