AMERICAN.
Washington, May 5. The Finance Committee of the Senate has reported on the proposed tariff. It has been largely altered. W ools of the first class have been reduced from 11 per cent, to 8 per cent., and of the second class from 12 per cent, to 9 per cent. Washington, May 6. In the new wool tariff third-class wools have been reduced from 10 per cent, to 7 per cent, and 4 per cent. The tariff comes into operation on July Ist. Washington, May 6. The International Postal Congress has opened here, the delegates present representing 60 countries. The Senate, by 43 to 26, rejected the Foreign Relations Committee’s amendments in the Arbitration Treaty. The majority, however, does not reach the two-thirds required to secure the absolute rejection of the amendments. Mr Smalley says the result of the voting on the amendments in the Arbitration Treaty indicates a direct refusal' on the part of the Senate to follow the lead of the Foreign Relations Committee.
