Dunedin, November IV
William Storey, farmer, near Waitati, died suddenly yesterday. The cause is supposed to he heart disease. CriitisTCuuacir, November 17.
A four-roomed cottage at Linwood, occupied by an aged couple named Towers, was destroyed by fire to-day. Mrs Towers, who is quite blind, nearly lost her life in endeavouring- to find her four-year-old grandson, v;ho, however, had run out Two adjoining cottages were considerably damaged.
Auoxland, November 17.
The eruptions at To Mare oil Friday commenced about midday, the b one lasting 40 minutes, succeeded by another about 3 p.m., which continued until dusk. Both were very interesting, Scarcely any uneasiness was experienced by the residents, although when tho first eruptive matter fell some of it was as large as split peas. It was supposed to be merely a hailstorm until the absence of moisture was noticed.
A party working on the slope of the Tongariro Mountain were compelled to beat a hasty retreat upon the first outbreak, being rather near the scene of opera* tions. They report that fire accompanied the first eruption, and a very severe earth f/uiver. These outbursts are looked upon quite calmly--in fact with favour, being regarded as safety valves for this volcanic region.
All out-settlers are quite safe, and did not experience any uneasiness, as a favourable wind prevented tbe dust from going in their direction.
The mountains are now comparatively quiet,
Timaru, November 17. . Mr O. Jackson, formerly Mayor, and Mr J. J. Grandi, ex - Councillor, stand for the Mayoralty. Invercargill, November 17. The police have discovered the culprit in the sticking-up of a farmer named Taylor at Waikiwi last week to be a youth of 17, named Fred Henry Farr. The lad has admitted his guilt, but said he meant no harm. Auckland, November 17. The monthly return for the Victoria Company is 119 loads treated for the yield of 2370 z retorted gold. The ore treated was from all parts of the mine. The Waitekauri Company’s return for four weeks, during which 1674 tons ore was treated, is olGGoz bullion, worth £5670.
