STRATFORD.
The Hawera Show on the sth and 6th attracted a large number of residents from this district. A number of exhibits were sent from Stratford and the Stratford Cooperative Dairy Factory had the honour of winning the Association’s trophy. Lavish preparations having been made befere-hand to give the Fire Brigade a good benefit on the 9th inst., a grand picnic with sports was held on the Hamlet street Recreation Grounds, at which there were competitions in fire brigade practice, games and races. There was a large attendance and the powers of the ladies who kindly assisted with the refreshments were taxed to the utmost. ■ The County Band played some good selections, and altogether a very enjoyable day was spent. Some exception has been taken to the aciion of those who, desiring a more entire change from their every-day surroundings, took the train and spent their holiday elsewhere. But if should bo remembered that people frem ether parts, probably with the same object, came to Stratford to enjoy the day. In the evening a concert was given, which was also largely attended, and was followed by a very successful dance.
A children’s fancy dress ball was held in the Town Hall last Friday, being got up by Miss Beswick, whose dancing classes have been attended by most of the children for some time past. After the little ones had danced and supped and departed, the floor was taken by their elders.
Mr Monkhouse, the Oppositionist candidate for Egruont, addressed the electors of Stratford on Tuesday night. He met with a good reception and a patient hearing, though it was evident that many present dissented from his statements and arguments. After a number of questions had been answered, a vote of thanks to Mr Monkhouse was carried, cheers were given for the Government, and cheers for Mr Svmes and for Mr Monkhouse. "The death is announced of Mr Savage, who recently sold his farm on the Climie road, and was residing in Stratford. Be- 1 ceased was a widower ; he leaves a large family. Mrs Harry Stanners, who lived for some years atNgaire, died suddenly on Monday, from a severe attack of asthma. She leaves a husband and two little children, and her death will be greatly regretted by many friends. The County Council elections took place on Wednesday. The South Riding, out of six candidates, elected Mr Thomson of Ngaire and Meyenberg of the Bird road. Mr George Curtis, was elected for the Central Riding. A smoke concert was given as a farewell to Mr S. H. James, who is about to take a trip to England. Everyone will wish him bon voyage, et bon retour. An unfortunate fire at Toko burned down the house of a settler there so rapidly that very little could be saved. The Rev. Mr Boyes, who up to the present has had the enormous area from Eltham to Inglewood under his charge, has announced that a resident clergyman will shortly arrive at Inglewood.
