WANGANUI.

Mrs Durie. widow of the late Major Durie, formerly Eesident Magistrate hero,, died on tho Ist inst. Deceased was much respected by a wide circle of friends. The funeral, which took place this afternoon, was one of the largest seen here for somo time.

A deplorable split has occurred here between the Aramoho and town branches of the Union Boat Club. It will be remembered that the crew that went so near to winning the championship at Picton regatta last year came from the Aramoho branch of this Club. It is understood that money matters are at the bottom of tho dispute. The Club is now advertising the Aramoho shed for sale. It is to be hoped in the interests of all concerned that an amicable settlement will ba arrived at, as bickering has done much to retard rowing matters in Wauganui in the past. Mr W. Empson, principal of the Collegiate School, has offered to provide free, tuition to all boys who qualify for Education Board scholarships but do not obtain them owing to the Board's lack of funds. Mr Empson's kind offer was accepted by tho Board with thanks.

His Honor tho Chief Justice holds n sitting of the Supreme Court hero on the Bth December, when he will hear a number of civil cases adjourned from the last sitting of the court. Strenuous efforts have so far entirely failed to induce anyone to contest the coming Mayoral election with Mr Alex. Hatrick, and present indications point to that gentleman having a walk over for the position. Matters political are at present rather quiet.
