The bed curtains in the residence of Mr Ryan, North Sydney, were set on fire one night recently by coming in contact with a lighted candle. The flames soon spread and took possession of the weatherboard building. Mrs Ryan taok one of the children out of its bed and ran outside with it. On returning she was unable to enter the room, owing to the smoke and flames. Considerable excitement was exhibited by the people who had assembled when it became known that a five-year-old boy was left in the burning room, but none of them made a move towards rescue. Mrs Ryan went to the side of the house and, breaking a window, rescued the child. He was burned about the hands, arms and feet.
