The discovery of gold in Peru, in the province of Carabaya, is confirmed. Two gentlemen who. have arrived at Southampton, one from Cuzco, the other from Arequipa, and can speak with authority on this subject, say that nuggets weighing one arroba (351 b) had been found. This is not the only recently discovered gold mine. There are others in other localities of the country of equal importance. Mr Michael Davitt, M.P., in proposing a resolution at the Irish National Convention in Dublin in favour of the complete amnesty of all political offenders in British prisons, made the startling statements, which created a great sensation, that during the nine years in which he had suffered penal servitude ho never for one hour was free from the pangs of hunger. The exterior of St. Paul’s is being cleaned at last. The stonework is being scoured in a housewifely manner, and the Apostles, w T ho perch precariously on the gable, are getting a much-needed wash. The curiously carved “ Conversion of St. Paul,” too, on the tympanum, is being rid of the accumulation of the London dirt that has long disfigured it. South Australian Treasury bills of the value of <£849,000 fall due in June, and it is probable that the Government will floa*; a loan on the London market to meet them.
