LIEDERKRANZ CONCERT.
Yesterday afternoon’s concert of the Wellington Liederlcranz at the Art Gallery was one of the most successful yet held by that society. The principal number of the first part of the concert was Chopin’s Polonaise in E-flat (op. 22), played with the utmost grace and delicacy, and at the same power, by Mrs Alfred Levi, who, after this extremely trying task, gave as an encore piece a formidable arrangement by Liszt of the opera “ Eigoletto.” Both of the solos ■were artistic, and well deserved the hearty applause they received. In the only other instrumental item of the programme, the violin solo Papini’s setting of “ Alice, Where Art Thou ?” Miss Julia Moran made this attractive little concert-piece very popular with the audience, who would have., liked to hear more of her playing. Though evidently nervous, Miss Teresa Moran, who has a sweet and powerful soprano voice, was heard to great advantage in BlumenthaTs “ Sunshine and Bain.” She sang with marked taste and feeling, and was recalled. Miss Koch achieved a distinct success in the song “ Oh, Fairest, Sweet and Holy,” and was encored. Her voice is of good quality and range, and she sings expressively. Miss Barnett sang Cowen s beautiful “ Old and Young Marie,” and did well, though evidently very nervous, and Mrs Wallace also sang. Several part-songs found a place on the programme. The accompaniments were sympathetically played by Mrs Nolan and Miss Cohen. Madame Rosaly Merz sang with admirable spirit and expression in the cantata, “ The Song of the Norns,” and Miss Salmon’s solos were also excellent.
For the complimentary concert to Mr T. G. Webb, A.T.C.L., at the Opera House last Monday there was an exceedingly attractive programme, and it was interpreted, with the greatest success. Miss Laura Fisher was imperatively encored for “Out on the Rocks,” and then sang a charming little ballad, “ Don’t Quite Forget Me.” As an encore for “ She Wandered Down the Mountain Side,” Miss Jeanne Ramsay gave Tosti’s “ Good Bye.” Miss Dugdale was recalled for Raff’s “Cachouca,” and, though she bowed, the audience were not content with that, and insisted that she should play, again. Messrs Maughan Barnett and A. F. Hill contributed Grieg’s Sonata No. 1, and were, of course, recalled. Mr H. Spackman gave a viola solo, and, in the absence of Mr MacHuff Boyd, a violin solo. Amongst the songs was a rhythmical melody by the talented song-writer, Mr A. F. Hill, “ For the flew Year,” and it was well sung by Mr E. J. Hill. Mr F. V. Waters sang “ The Bedouin s Love Song ” ; Mr R. B. Williams Schubert, s “ Adieu ” and, for an encore, “ Who is Sylvia?” and Mr Hugh Wright “ The Song of Hybrias the Cretan.” Messrs Tallis Trimnell and L. F. Watkins were the accompanists.
