Great satisfaction is expressed here at the splendid treatment received from the Government in the matter of public works votes. Mr John Ray, son of Mr Thomas Ray, owner of the Taratalii Hotel, was married last week to Miss Campbell, daughter of Mr Hugh Campbell, an old and respected settler of the Opaki. The following resolution was passed at a meeting of the North Wairarapa Liberal Association on Saturday evening:—“This Association is satisfied that in applying the use of the sinking funds under the Loans to Local Bodies Act for the purpose of carrying out a vigorous public works policy, the Government was actuated by a praiseworthy
desire to promote settlement, and that in using the money as they have done they have consulted the best interests of the Colony.”

A question has been raised here over
the duties of a coroner. A child was killed the other day in a buggy accident.
The matter was reported to the Coroner, who considered an inquest unnecessary. When applied to for a certificate of death he referred the undertaker to the medical
gentleman who had seen the body after death. The medical man declined to
certify as to the cause of death, on the ground that it was only on hearsay that he gathered that the child had been
struck by a vehicle. A good deal of inconvenience was thereby caused. Perhaps the editor of the Mail will be able to advise your readers as to who under the circumstances should have issued the certificate.
A party was driving from Tenui to Masterton on Sunday, when their vehicle
capsized over an embankment, and they received a severe shaking. '
