CARTERTON.

Tha Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society has purchased a further section of land, on which they intend to erect a shilling stand for the public. Messrs Booth and Buchanan are finding (be grearer part of rhe money, if not all. When Mr Dorset undertook the office of secretary, eight years back, the members' roll numbered 60, now the membership is 340. Eight new members were proposed and accepted on Saturday. Mr H. R. Beetharo, the president, gave a special donation of ten guineas for prizes. Already numerous entries have been sent in and there is every justification for the anticipation that the entries will be more numerous than ever this year. The privileges will be sold by Mr F. H. Wood, on Saturday next.

The trustees of the defunct Carterton Social Club have handed over to His Worship tho Mayor of Carterton, all the moneys they had in hand, viz, Til 83 7d, logo Lnwaids the find being raised for tho purchase of an addition to the Recreation Reserve. Two large tables they had over have been presented to the Library Committee, for the public reading room.

The annual examination of the Carterton state school was made last week and passed off very successfully, the percentage being something like 86. The Clareville school had but one failure throughout the whole school, for which Mr B. Browne deserves every credit.

Mr John Riy, eldest son of Mr Thomas Ray, the well-known and popular host of the Taratahi Hotel, w\s mirried last Wednesday to Mi3S Campbell, daughter of Mr Hugh Campbell, one of the earliest families that settled on the Opaki. They were married at the re idence of the bride’s parents, the Rev. R. Woods officiating. There was, also, a very pretty wedding celebrated at St. Mark’s Church, Cirterton, by the Rev W. Bdlacbey, when Mr Henry Wall, eldest son of Mr George Wall, yf M irtioborough, and Miss Catherine Henley, of Kingston, Surrey, England, were united in wedlock. The bridesmaids were M‘ss Elwards and Miss Ritchie, who, &3 well as the bride, were neatly and tastefully dressed. Congratulations and presents were sent to the young couple from all'parts of the district. The School Commissioners having accepted the site offered them in the Forty Mile Bush, in exchange for the Education Reserve they held near Carterton, there is nothing standing in the way of the latter endowment being transferred to the corporation of Carterton, as promised by the Minister of Lands some months ago. The Council prepose to go into a system of drainage for the town, and raise a loan for tho purpose, which they are justilied in doing now that they have an assured revenue with which they can guarantee the payment of the interest. A meeting of delegates wai held in the Foresters' Hall, Carterton, last week, when it was finally decided to form an amalgamated Friendly Societies’ Band. The deposit required to purchase a good se'. of instruments has been guaranteed by the societies, and sufficient names have been handed in to form a strong band.
