HAWKE’S BAY A. AND P. SHOW

Napier, October 8. The Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s show commenced to-day. There was not a merino on the ground. Mr T. Tanner took most of the awards, including the championship for rams, but T. Lowry was also very successful, and sent the champion ewe in Border Leicesters. The Hon J. D. Ormond and Mr W. Nelson divided honours. The former took the champion prize for rams, with an animal bred by Little Bros., of Canterbury, and the latter a champion for ewes with one of his own breeding. In English Leicesters, Messrs T. Tanner and J. N. Williams fought a very even battle. The champion ram, exhibited by Mr Williams, was bred by Threlkeld, of Canterbury. The champion ewe, shown by Mr Tanner, was bred by Overton, of Canterbury. Romneys were in strong force, but only local breeders exhibited, Messrs F. Hutchinson and R. Harding being the most successful exhibitors, and taking the championships for ewe and ram respectively. The pens of sheep are a maiked feature of the show. In draught horses, Mr Ormond’s Prince Arthur, bred by the Hon M. Holmes, was the champion; and in thoroughbreds Mr McOaul’s Wapiti took the prize. Napier October 9. The second day of the A. and P. show was marred by cold weather and threatened rain, which militated against the attendance.
