CITY COUNCIL.
The Wellington City Council met last week. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. Fisher), Councillors Fraser, Smith, McGill, Devine, Higginbottom, Anderson, Myers, Lingard, Lindsay, Willeston and Harcourt.
A petition was read ftom a number of ratepayers, Mount street, asking that a channel be laid in McKenzie street. The drainage from the Catholic Cemetery flowed over their property.—Work to be done.
An application from Brandon and Hislop re proposed right-of-way, Tinatori road, was referred to the City Surveyor.
Chapman and Tripp’s claim of .£25, made on behalf of Dr Martin in consequence of an accident to his vehicle in lngestre street, was referred to the Engineer and City Solicitor. .
The Plumbers’ Union wrote re the assistant drain inspector recently appointed.— No action taken.
St. Patrick’s College authorities wrote complaining of the state of Duppa street. —Beferred to the engineer. G. W. Fitchett complained that he had cleared off gorse on his land on the Town Belt, but his neighbours didn’t. —Beferred to Eeserves Committee.
Mi’s E. J. A. Stevenson applied to be allowed to use half-inch rough lining for external walls in No. 2 district. The buildings were being shifted from one street to another and re-erected. —Beferred to the Public Works Committee.
J. J. Aston brought under notice the necessity of widening Upper Hankey street. He proposed an expenditure of .£lO. —Carried on the motion of Councillor McGill.
The Upland Estates Company wrote re proposed new road a deviation from Graveyard road to Moxham’s road. After considerable discussion, during which strong opposition was manifested to the work being done at the Council’s expense, the matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. The Public Works Committee’s recommendations, already published in the New Zealand Times, were adopted. With regard to clause 4, granting a right-of-way in Tinakori road, applied for by St. Paul’s Church, it was decided to add a condition to the effect that no buildings be erected there hereafter at a less value than .£250 each. In reference to clause 13, Mr Doyle, Inspector of Nuisances, was requested to suggest a man to take up his duties during his absence on holiday.
The Fire Brigade Committee recommended that Captain Kemsley be empowered to purchase a horse for the Fire Brigade in place of the one lately sold. Also, that he be empowered to obtain stables. A bath was wanted at the captain’s quarters.—Agreed to. Councillor Fraser moved that the application of the Boys’ Institute for more land in order to increase the accommodation be granted. Councillor Willeston seconded. —Bequest acceded to. Correspondence was read relative to the damage done to Epuni street during the late rains. Councillor Smith said he had visited the spot with Councillor McGill. It had apparently been caused through the action of the private owners between the street and the property of Bichardson Bros. It was decided to write to the private owners asking them to prevent a recurrence of the damage in future. Accounts amounting to .£2570 2s were passed for payment.
