GREYTOWN.
A petition has been very largely signed in this district asking tho Minister of Lands to acquire some properties in the South Wairarapa for settlement under the Lands for Settlement Act 1891, and tho petition states that, thero is a growing desire for land in this district. A tire occurred here early on Tuesday by which a very handsome shop and premises owned and occupied by Mr Charles Bauer*, draper, was entirely destroyed by lire, and a house next door, owned by Mr MoAra. of Mastorton, and occupied by Mr Al. R. Varnliain, was also damaged. Tho tire broke out at the rear ot Air Bailors’ shop. Mr Bauers was in Wellington, and there was no one sleeping upon the premises. Mr Bauers had a very heavy stock, roughly estimated at .42000 and upwards, while tho insurance is said to lie 41200 in the South British office. Only a little of tho stock was saved. The building was a comparatively new one, erected by the occupier about three years ago at an estimated cost ol about TJOI), while the insur.au that is said to tie XI O with the New Zealand Insurance Company. The damage to the next building is not very serious.
