This year tho Admiralty will pay JMB,G2O to tho Peninsular and Oriental, White Star, Cunard and Canadian Pacific Steamship Companies, an a .subvention in respect of II vcssclh, to ho used as armed merchant cruisers in easo of war. This sum is an increaso of .£3OOO over the amount paid last year. These companies, without further subsidy, have also agreed to hold 17 other vessel's at the disposal of the Admiralty, in order that these ships may be armed at short notice. A merchant reservo depot has been established afc each port at which thuy usually call. The Petono Borough Council has accepted tho tender of Messrs 0. and T. C.udbj for tho construction of the otopdmnk.
