The corrected returns of the quinquennial census taken in the German Empire on tho 2nd of December lust show the total population to he 52,214,511.'!. The increase has been larger than in any preceding quinquonniirl period, and is at tho rate of I'M per cent, pi r annum. 'The German newspapers point oi t that the population of the Empire now e:.cecds that of France by 11 millions, and that the growth in Germany since the census rf 1890 has I been nearly three millions compared with barely 120,000 in France. In spite of agrarian lamentations, thoro is hardly any trace to be found in tho census returns of the desolation which is supposed to be overtaking the rural provinces of Germany. The chief increase is, however, still to.be found in the industrial regions.
