The Trustee? of the Benevolent Institution to-day considered the case of a woman who, while receiving relief, was alleged to have withdrawn money from tho Post Office Savings Bank. It was stated that enquiries from tho Chief Postmaster, the secretary to the department, and the Post-master-General were fruitless, as each refused to divulgo information of banking business. The Trustees instructed the chairman to consult tho solicitors, and, if so advised, prosecute tho woman. Dunedin, May 28. At a mooting of the Charitable Aid Board, a letter was received from the Trustees of the Benevolent Institution, requesting reconsideration of the decision respecting tho trustees' requisition, which the Board had reduced by .£IOOO. The Board resolved to adhere to its previous decision.

At a meeting of the Otago Central Railway League, a resolution was carried suggesting td the Government that when fho°railway reaches Maniototo Plain, the desirability of constructing a lighter line at less expense for further extension should be coimidered. Invkkcaiuull, May 28.

A deputation from the Invercargill Borough Council waited on tho Hon Mr Ward to-day to urge upon the Government tin; necessity for re-establishing the railway workshops in Invercargill. The Mayor stated that 30 men were employed hero oa general repairs as against 150 in Dunedin; and that lamps, lamp-glasses, &c, were imported from Dunedin, which was an injustice to local retailers. It was urged that tho mileage of linos in Southland entitled the district to consideration in the matter of repairs. Mr Ward said ho would convey the representations of tho deputation to the Minister of Labour, and would co-operate with the members for the district to get justice done it in this matter. Last night a young woman named Margaret Parnell was walking on <.>ueenstreot Wharf, when she suddenly left her companion, a young man, and jumped into the water. She was rescued witli some difficulty by Constable Oliphant. The Governor and Lady Glasgow left by special train for Otorohanga, thence to Kotorua on Monday. The Governor reaches Wellington overland on Saturday next, Tho warship Orlando is being overhauled in Calliope Dock. This morning the cruiser Is'atoomba left for Lyttolton, where she goes into dock. 11.M.5. Wallaroo left for Fiji this morn-

ing. The Wailcato arrived at 10 a.m. from London, after a passage of 59 days. On the 18th hist, a lire was discovered in No. 5 hold. It is supposed to havo boon caused by tho spontaneous combustion of tarred felt, and was only extinguished after pouring in water for three hours. The damage is believed to be small. Tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce supports tho Melbourno Chamber of Commerce in its resolution protesting against tho proposed increase of dock charges on goods landed over tho sido in tho port of London.
