EDUCATION BOARD.

Tho Board of Education met la3t week. Present—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), W. W. McCardle, J. Young, J. Robertson. P. Bradey, W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R., W. A. Pitzhcrbert, Dr Newman, M.H.R., Rev J. Patorson. Mrs Burgess, a member of tho Kaitawa Committee, attended, and asked that Mr Cooper, recently appointed to tho school, should bo compelled to reside in the town ship. It was decided to inform Mr Cooper that he must live in tho township. A deputation consisting of Messrs McLeod and Harris asked that another school bo provided at tho Upper Opaki district. Tho Chairman said the matter would be considered.

A deputation representing tho residents of Brooklyn asked that a school bo provided in that district. Tho mattor was referred to the inspector for a report. A deputation representing tho Tawa Plat Cjtninitteo asked that certain improvements be made at the school, and also that tho teacher's residence be enlargod. The deputation were informed that tho carpenter would attend to the improvements as soon as he could spare the time. The question of enlarging tho residence was not entertained. An application for permission to erect a trap-shed by Mr Sanson, tho teacher, was granted. It was docided that assistance bo given to aided schools irrespective of the number of families represented by tho children attending. The Chairman recommended that schools established in future, having an attendance of less than 30 children, bo classified, and the teachers paid on a fixed basis. On tho motion of Mr Robertson, tho Chairman's recommendations, that tho teachers in schools with an attendance ranging from 15 to 20 bo paid JC7O ; 20 to 25, £BO ; and 25 to 30, J&K), were adopted. It was also decided that schools with loss than 15 bo treated on their merits. A grant of JMO was made towards building a school at Blairlogie, and an application for an aided school at Clifton grovo was held over for further particulars. An application for extended leavo of absence by Miss McGowan (Levin) was granted. Leavo of absence for a month was granted to Miss Cooper (Petone). Tho resignation of Miss 11. Harvey (Masterton) was accepted. An application of tho Shannon Committee for improved ventilation at tho school was referred to the carpenter to attend to, and ho was directed to report on a request for repairs to the Waingawa School.

An application for an improved wator supply at Kaiwarra was referred to tho chairman.

An application from Cartorton for tho erection of an infant school was referrod to tho Inspector. An application for a school at To Ore Oro was referred to tho Masterton Committee The appointmont of Messrs O. 11. Osborne, R. E. Blade and R. McKay to fill tho vacancies on the Dreyorton Committee were approved. The Board declined to accede to an application for repairs to residenco at Dreyerton, and a request for additions to school was held over for consideration until funds wero available. A request for addition to school at Ballanco was refused. Fuller details wore directed to lie asked for with respect to a request by Otaki for a special grant for general purposes. The carpenter was directed to attend to repairs at the Masterton shelter-sheds as soon Jas convenient, and an application for seats for the Kindergarten table was left to tho inspector. Consideration of a request for a now school at Scarborough was deferred.

The Hun W. C. Walker (Minister of Education) visited tho Auckland Technical School, and was accompanied by Mr Thoo. Cooper, who is a monibor of tho Board of Education. Mr Walker was much gratified by what lie saw, and expressed his surprise that the Board of Education did not occupy the same relations to tho school as existed between tho Technical School and the Hoard of Education in Wellington, fn tho Wellington district, 110 Hoard teachers were qualifying themselves to impart technical education, while in Auckland onl~ three teachers attended tho classes. Mr It. Lcc, Inspector of Schools, will inspect the undermentioned schools ss follows : June 4th, Ivoro Koro; June Bth, Wainui-O-Mata; Juno 11th, Pencarrow Lighthouse. Mr T. It. Fleming will inspect schools as follows : —Ohau, 4th ; Kereru, sth ; Shannon, Dth and lOfh ; Tokomarii, 11th. Tho Wellington District School Commissioriers met on Monday, when Mr J. It. Blair was re-elected chairman. Several transfers of sections were granted, and it was decided to take legal, steps to recover arrears of rent. Itwasdcoidod to obtain a report from the Crown lands ranker on an application for a reduction of rent on 400 acros reserved near Apiti, as tho valuation was higher than that of the adjoining Crown lands. Tho secretary (Mr Tone) was instructed to make a report on section 1580, block 1), Kairanga.
