RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WOODVILLE RACES. By Telegraph.—-Own Correspondent. WoodviLle, February 5. The first day’s racing of the Woodville District Jockey Club’s Meeting took place today. The day w~s beautifully fine, consequently the attend., nee, which included many visitors from the Wairarapa, Wellington, Napier and Wanganui districts, was above the average, numbering altogether about 1500 people. The course and surroundings were in excellent order ; the management of the meeting was businesslike, and everything, as far as the officers were concerned, went off without a hitch. Mr H. Piper’s starting with the flag was uniformly good. This is the first occasion on which the Club have attempted a two-days meeting, and there is every prospect that the gathering will be a financial success. The total investments on the totalisator to-day wore £1029, whilo at the one-day meeting held in April last the sum of £3340 was passed through the totalisatoif

The racing during the afternoon was of an interesting character, although the Cup race was marred by two accidents. Just as the field, bunched together, swept past the grandstand enclosure, Orion’s Belt, who was in the middle of the ruck, fell, and his rider, Whittaker, had his collarbone dislocated. When Lotion was occupying a good position coming along the side before turning into the straight, the horse got jammed between two others, and Connop, the rider, was lifted out of fhc saddle and carried on to tho horse’s neck, and when Lotion got clear Connop fell off and two horses struck him on the head, rendering him unconscious until the evening, when he regained consciousness ; but he is badly shaken. The details of the racing are as follow :

Woodville, February 6

The second day’s racing of the Woodville meeting was held to-day. The weather was uncomfortably warm, and the attendance was not so good as on the first day, but numbered about 1200.

The railway authorities were blamed for not running a special train from Palmerston North the same as on the first day, as a large number of people who remained from the first day expected to get as far as Palmerston North to-night. However, the coach proprietors seized the opportunity, and a large number of vehicles left Woodville in the evening packed with passengers. Tno racing during the afternoon was very exciting, although the result of the Stewards’ Uack Handicap and the Midsummer Handicap met with the disapproval of tho public, and comment? were made on certain glaring reversal- of form. The stewards had a busy time considering protests. Two lodged against Hi Us tone and Ngatuere were dismissed, and in the Farewell Hack Handicap another protest by the owner of Flaneur against Rainbow for alleged inconsistent running was dismissed as frivolous. Notwithstanding the time thus taken up, the officers worked bard, and punctuality was again strictly observed. The meeting all through was a great success.

The totalisator investments to-day amounted to £3890, making a total of £BSOI for two days, which is very encouraging to the Club. Stewards’ Handicap, of 45 sovs. Seven
