THE HUTT FLOOD.
The Inspector of Roads in the Hutt County, in his monthly report to the County Council, stated that the flood in the Hutt River last week, from the gorges to the Pakuratahi, was the highest for the past 20 A wing was being made at the Silverstream breakwater, and. it would have been completed in a few days, but the flood had carried it nearly all away. The whole of the old work had gone, and about 12ft of the wing that was made in 1894. An immense amount of timber floated down the river, and was continually crushing into the breakwater. It seemed hopeless to stop the river here. As soon as one place was made secure the river broke in either above or below- it. At the bridge which spans the Akatarawa River a pile of timber collected against the centre pier.- Some of the trees were SOft long and from 2ft to 4ft through.
The eastern portion of the road had been slightly damaged in places, but the western road seemed to have escaped the storrii altogether.
