RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

THE WELLINGTON CUP WINNER. A PROTEST DECIDED. At a special mooting of the stewards of the Racing Club on Monday, the pro-test~eirtered-by Mr R. Allen, the owner and nominator of Saracen, ..who finished second in the Wellington Cup, against the stakes bein»awarded to Brooklet on the ground that Mr Quinlivan, the nominator of Brooklet, had instructed the seci-otary, Mr 11. M. Lyon, to scratch the marc for the Cap, was disallowed. The stake, therefore, goes to Brooklet. DANEYLRKE JOCKEY CLUB. The Danevirke Jockey Club held its meeting on the new course at Tamaki on January 30th, and it proved a highly successful gathering. The going was rather heavy, but some good racing was witnessed. Murtagh's starting machine was used and gave avevy satisfaction. The Waipawa Maori Band enlivened the proceedings by giving a number of choice selections during

the clay. Mr J. C. Fraser made a capital secretary, and the stewards ably assisted in making the gathering the success it undoubtedly was. The sum of .£2593 passed through the machine. Hilda 11. had no difficulty in appropriating the Maiden Hurdles, and Mr Portland's Tokatea (who was well backed in Wellington) easily won the Maiden Plate. Gold Cup got home Fust in the Stewards' Stakes, beating Slumber, Trout and Magic, Lindsay tiding a good race on the winner. Outlaw had an easy win in the Hurdles, and Aio, nicely handled by Lindsay, won the chief event, beating Kauri Gum, Rainbow and four others. Scrap Iron won the Selling Race, and Rainbow beat the Maiden Plate winner Tokixtea in the High Weight Handicap and paid the biggest dividend of the day—j S-j 10s. Gold Cup put up a penalty and came out and easily won the flying, Moira, the second favourite, being left at the post. This made Lindsay's third successful mount during the day. Daxeyirke Handicap, of 75 sovs. 122 Mr Hope's Aio, Sst 51b (Lindsay) 1 115 Mr Carr's Kauri Gum, Sst 21b (Fairbrother) 2 108 Mr Walton's Rainbow, Sst 71b (Banks) 3 70 Goosander, 47 Flaneur, 13 Slumber, 11 Trout also started. This was a very good raeo, all the horses running well together until the straight was reached, when Aio was brought up with a great rush on the outside, and won a well contested race by a neck, Rainbow third close up.
