EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held last week. Present—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), W. A. Fitzherbert, F. Bradey, F. H. Eraser, W. W. McCardlo, J. Young, W. C. Buchanan, M.H R., Dr Newman, M.H.R., and Rev J. Paterson. The Chairman said tho state ot the finances was as follows: Capitation account, dr., iJ4B7 10s Sd; building account, dr.. <£77 9s Id ; payments required, capitation account, .£2995 10s Sd ; building account, £l5O Ss Id. Cm the motion of Mr Bradey, seconded by Dr Newman, the question of increases of salary to pupil teachers was, after some discussion, adjourned till the next meeting. The Chairman, Dr Newman and Mr Fitzherbert were appointed to confer with the Petone Committee regarding tho sanitary arrangements of that school. Leave of absence was granted to Miss McGowan (Levin), Miss Forbes (Matarawa), Miss Hardwick (Kaitara) and Miss Reith (To Aro Infants'). Miss McKcnzie was appointed pupilteacher at the Kaitara School. Miss Player applied to be transferred from Petone, or that her fare to Wellington should be paid in order to allow her to attend the Saturday classes. The Board decided to pay her fare to Wellington. M. de Mev applied to be appointed physical instructor to tho Board's pupil-teachers. On the motion of Mr Buchanan, seconded by Mr Fitzherbert, it was decided not to entertain the application. The chairman was requested to enquire as to the qualifications of Miss Dorizac, who was recommended to be put in charge of the Pencarrow aided school. The appointment of Miss J. Hougnton to the Matarau School, and of Miss Stebm to the aided school at Aohanga, was approved._ The question of an aided school at Otohuia (Alfredton) was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr McCardle to report. A request from the local committee to change the name of the Mangaone School to Rorgamai was acceded to. The Shannon Committee wrote asking if the teacher had power to detain children after school hours, or in other words " to keep them in." Mr Young proposed that the chairman, Mr Bradey and himself bea committee to enquire into the matter with the local committee. Mr Fraser seconded the motion. Mr Buchanan moved as an amendment, audit was seconded by Mr McCardle, that in the opinion of the Board it is not competent for a teacher to detain a child contrary to the wish of its parents. The amendment was lost by the casting vote of the chairman, and the motion was carried. The Whakataki Committee wrote asking for the sum of ,£SO for additions to the teacher's residence. It was decided that two rooms be added to the residence. The request of the Kaitawa Committee for certain alterations to the school was agreed to. Miss E. Knox was appointed pupil teacher. The question oi granting an application lor some fencing at the Parkvale School was left in the hands of the chairman. The Grcytown Committee asked lor a number of small repairs, which the Board decided shall be done by its carpenter The Board agreed to have the school and residence at Karori painted at a cost of .£23. The chairman was requested to report as to the cost of asphalting at the Wadestown School. . . „ ~ The Newtown Committee lor the refund of money spent on repairs to the playground. The chairman wa3 requested to report on the matter. An application for the Board to take over the Taratahi West aided school was adjourned for a month. Petitions for the establishment ot schools at South Featherston and Kahautara were referred to Inspector Lee to make enquiries and to report. J. G. Cox, who lives in the Tinui District, asked for aid in getting his children educated. Mr Buchanan gave notice to move for an amendment of the regulations so as to allow the Board to comply with the request. The re?ignation of Miss Newton, Kaiwarra, was accepted. It was decided that the Opaki school should be painted. . An application from the settlers and residents at Pungaroa for a school was referred to the chairman and Mr McCardle to report. A suggestion was made by the Mount Cook

School Committee that a bonus should ba paid to Miss Craig for the efficient manner in which she had carried out the duties of Mrs Francis during the absence of the latter. The Board deferred consideration of tha matter to its next meeting. A report from Inspectors Lee and Fleming, as to the working of Mount Cook Girls* School, was considered, and it was decided that the Inspectors should report more fully to the Board at its next meeting.
