THE EUROPEAN SITUATION.
Washington, January 28. The House has adopted the resolution passed by the Senate .with regard to Armenia, urging the Powers to enforce the Berlin Treaty. An amendment in favour of terminating the relations with Turkey was rejected by a large majority. Paris, January 28. Le Temps says that Mr Chamberlain's recent speech in reference to the present situation lacked tact, and had a tendency to provoke the other Powers. Melbourne, January 28. In the recent retrenchment scheme tho Defence Force felt the effects of the pruning knife pretty freely. Now that we are face to face with tho European situation, stops are being taken to rectify the matter by bringing the Artillery up to its original strength, with preference to the trained men who were dispensed with. Those who have not obtained other positions will find themselves reinstated after receiving compensation for loss of employment.
