Abraham and Williams report :—Our sales for the wee* were held at Pohangina and Palmerston. At the former on Tuesday a fair entry of sheep came forward ; cattle in few numbers. f-'heep were slow under the hammer, but all sold afterwards. Sheep—fc'at ewes. 5s 6d to 6s ; breeding ewes, good mouths, 6s ; 2-tooth wethers, 6s Gd ; 2-tooths, mixed sexes, 6s 4d ; aged ewes, 4s 3d ; lambs in wool. 4s 7d. At Palmerston on Thursday sheep were numerous, the qualit}' varied greatly, and those of an indifferent sort were without enquiry ; good quality in demand and firm at quotations. Cattle plentiful ; declined in value all round, some classes of steers from lOs to 15s per head on late rates ; weaners and young cattle generally were difficult to place, in this class more business being done privately Sheep—2-tooth wethers, in good order, 7s Sd to 7s lOd ; others, 0s to 6s Gd ; fat wethers, 9s ; 2-tooth ewes, 7s Gd to 7$ Sd. Cattle —Weaner steers, £2 2s Gd ; yearling steers, 30s ; mixed weaners, 17s Gd to 22s 6 I ; mixed cattle, 18 months, 31s ; 2£-year heifers, .£2 10s ; 2.V-year steers, £3 ; 3-year steers. £3 12s 6d to £3 lGs ; cows and calves, £i 5s ; fat bullocks, £0 17s 6d. Matthew Henry reports of his Palmerston sale as follows : —Both sheep and cattle were forward in fair numbers ; the former being mostly of medium quality were neglected, while for steers there were few bikers present, resulting in a small volume of business being done at quotations. Cattle — Heifers and calves, £2 15s ; young dairy cows, £1; yearlings, £2 2s Gd. iSheep— Forward ewes and wethers, 8s ; fat ewes, 6s 9d ; 2 and 4-tooth wethers, medium, 7s; small 2-tooth owes, Gs Id. Pigs —Stores, Ss Gd ; weaners, 4s Gd. The following London market telegram, dated January 21st, has been received by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company:—Tallow Medium and inferior mutton tallow is in demand, but fine is neglected. Frozen meat —-Wellington mutton is worth 3;jd per lb. Butter market firm. Fine qualities, 108 s to 110 s per cwt. A. G. Taine and Co. report of their horse sale on Saturday : Owing to the trotting meeting we had only a small entry, and nothing special, and the attendance was very limited. The sales made were of no guide to the market, so we merely give market quotations. We have had no draughts in the market for some time, and a few good sorts would now command attention. Quotations stand about as follow : —First-class draughts, .£22 to £26 ; medium, £l4 to £lB ; express and spring-cart horses, young and sound, with action, £lO to £ls ; second raters, £6 to £8 ; l> u ngy and dog-cart horses, about the same. Matthew Henry reports of his Palmerston sale on Thursday:—A good entry of cattle and sheep came forward to-day. The attendance was not up to the average, and those presen were apparently hanging back, and trade ruled dull. A fair clearance was effected, however, during the day at quotations. Some sales were reported at 4s 2d, but afterwards denied. There is no disposition to sell. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,509,000 quarters, and for the Continent 560,000 quarters. The American visible wheat supply is estimated at 98,900,000 bushels. London, January 24. New Zealand long-berried wheat, ex warehouse, nominal; South Australian ditto, 29s 9d ; Victorian ditto, 29s 9d, market quiet. New Zealand mutton —Second quality, 3gd. New Zealand hemp, firm; good brought ,£ls per ton. The butter market is flat at 108 s; finest quality, 110 s. Sugar —German beet, lis 9d ; Java, 13s 6d, firm. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f .o.b. in Clyde, 46s 9d. London, January 26. The English wheat nurket has an upward tendency, the Continental is advancing, and the American has a general rising tendency. At the tallow sales 140* casks were offered, 1325 being sold medium mutton at 225, medium beef at 2QsGdj^a

Opossum skins are in active demand, and show an advance of 15 per cent. The greater portion of the beef by the Duke of Buckingham was mildewed. A London firm has contracted with Mr" Young, of South Australia, for an Unlimited supply of honey. The Bank of England returns published today show the total reserve to be ,£37,173,000, the proportion of reserve to liabilities being 62"52 per cent. Three months' bills are discounted at 2 per cent.
