MUSIC.
A feeling has been prevalent for some time past that more attention should be paid to Scottish music in Weliington, and the idea was mooted by a few enthusiasts that a society should be started with that object. A large number of influential citizens promised to become subscribers to the Society when it was started, and His Excellency the Governor notified that he would be pleased to become patron. Encouraged "by these promises of support, the promoters called a meeting of those interested at the Royal Hotel last week, when there was a large attendance. Mr R. 'Thomson presided. It was decided that the name of the Society should be the Burns! Society, and - that the following gentlemen should be asked to accept office: —President, Mr > John Duthie, M.H.R.; vice-presidents, Messrs T. K. Macdonald and J. Ross ; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr Archibald Nairn i committee, Messrs J. B. Mack,
W'&strreV-, A-. S-> Paterson, McKinnon, A’ Lindsay, Thomson and G-. Boss. .Mr Mao Duff Boyd was appointed musical 'director, and it was decided to inaugurate the Society with a Scottish concept in the Opera House on the 25th inst-.
