RAILWAY RETURNS.

The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ending 22nd June shows the receipts to have been £80,261 16s 4d, and the expenditure .£57,695 16s Bd. In the corresponding period of last year the figures were : Receipts, .£76,329 Is Id; expenditure, £55,814 8s 4d. Of the revenue, the North Island lines contributed £28,970 2s Bd, as against £27,146 19s 9d for the corresponding four weeks of last year ; and the Middle Island lines £51,291 13s Bd, as against £49,182 Is 4d. The North Island lines absorbed of the expenditure £20,724 19s 6d, as against I .£21,929 3s 4d, and the Middle Island lines .£36,970 17s 2d, as against .£33,915 Is 4d. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, for the respective periods of 1895 and 1894 was as follows: —North Island —Kawakawa, 87'73, 176-85 ; Whangarei, 79-88, 98'81; Kaihu, 53-46, 102-99; Auckland, 71*20, 74-74 ; Napier-Taranaki, 66-11, 67-79; Wellington, 7007, 72-81. Middle Island Hurunui - Bluff, 5921, 6037; Greymouth-Bmnner, 50'62, 54-94; Greymouth-Hckitika, 45*71, 61*27; Westport, 43-95, 51-76 ; Nelson, 76'24, 8375, Picton, 93-61, 105-75. Grand totals, 62-08, 64-38. On the Wellington section during the four weeks ending June 22nd the receipts amounted to £5131 16s 3d, as against £4695 17s 8d for the corresponding four weeks of last year; the number of passengers carried was 26,439, as against 27,444; the fares amounted to £2020 3s lid, as against .£1892 Is 2d ; the freight on goods to £2585 15s 10d as against ,£2467 9s 7d.
