THE PACIFIC CABLE.

London, May 22. Fanning Island has been selected as the station at which the proposed Pacific cable should touch. Melbourne; May 22. The Premier has wired to the other colonies urging the necessity of joint action in bringing pressuretobearon the Imperial authorities for a subsidy to the-Pacific cable, and also the advisableness of an early meeting in London of a commission representing the Imperial Government and the colonies to discuss a suitable plan of co-operation. London, May 24.

Lord Rosebery, in reply to the deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce who waited upon him, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the PostmasterGeneral in support of the resolution carried at the Canadian Conference favouring a subsidy to the Pacific steamers and the cable, said that he hoped shortly to be in a position to announce a satisfactory decision upon the questions. Messrs Huddart urge an Imperial expenditure of .£IOO,OOO per annum on the Pacific steamers and cable, which will be amply repaid b# .the improved communication, and will strengthen the attachment of the colonies, and develop British influence in the Pacific. London, May 25. Lord Rosebery announced that the committee had concluded the consideration of Lord Jersey's report with reference to the Canadian Conference. The Premier stated that he was glad that the proposals for the Pacific cable and the subsidy to the steamers had originated in the colonies instead of Great Britain. Melbourne, May 27. The Premier (Mr Turner) has received a favourable reply from the New Zealand Government to the suggestion that the Agents-General should be instructed to urge the cable question on the Imperial authorities.
