ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
A case of attempted suicide occurred at Dempsie’s Boardinghouse, Taranaki place, on Sunday afternoon. About 5 o’clock a woman avlio has been going under the name of Mrs Schmeider, but whose real name is believed to be Winnie Wilkinson, fainted, and on recovering consciousness informed Mrs Nash, who has recently been in charg-e of the house, that she had taken poison. A bottle which was found in her possession was taken to Mr Woods, chemist, who stated that it contained sulphate of zinc, opium, and Abater. Shortly after 6.30 one of the occupants of the house reported the matter to Constable Smith, ancl he at once sent for Dr Teare, Avho administered an emetic and other remedies, after which the woman was taken to the Hospital by Sergeant Bernard and the constable. At the institution the stomach pump was used, and there appears no reason to doubt that she Avill ultimately recover. On searching her room subsequently the police found a quantity of poison, including some arsenic. The woman, who is about 35 years of age, is a widow. She has been staying at the house for the past fortnight, and during that time has shown considerable eccentricity.
