Shanghai, May 9. Cholera is raging among the Japanese at Talien-wan. It is reported that France is demanding the cession of the Pescadores by Japan. Capetown, May 8. Replying to a question in the Assembly, the Premier (Mr Rhodes) said the Imperial authorities had not consulted the Cape Government prior to the annexation of the Ambegesa country. The Cape, May 10. Referring to the proposed duty on frozen meat, Mr Rhodes said he favoured protecting the products of the soil of the colony, but was opposed to protecting manufactures. London, May 10. Captain Lugard has returned from the west coast of Africa. In the course of an interview he vouched for the truth of the statement that the Governor of Dahomey led the French Niger expedition, and stated that two large forces of French troops are assembled at the lower part of the river. Captain Lugard concluded a treaty with the chiefs of Borgu, on the Niger, without paying attention to the French claims. London, May 12. The Times does not question that the French claims of British territory in the Niger involve a monstrous pretension, and adds that the good feeling existing between London and Paris alone prevents the Company’s troops from ejecting the French. Paris, May 10. The French press reports that the Governor of Dahomey has completed the formal occupation of the hinterland up to the Niger. Victoria (8.C.), May 12. The Government complains that the United States has not yet paid the Behring Sea award, and that the fishermen are therefore practically penniless, and are unable to refit for the present season. Tangier, May 13. Six hundred Moors have been killed in an inter-tribal battle at .Quedbourir, in Morocco.
