TO THE EDITOR. \ Sir, There has been a lot of talk amongst trotting circles of getting";up'a trotting meeting for the benefit of tb© above family, and to show their regard, f6k... one who has done much to improve the quality of the trotting horse in Wellington, the results of which we see at the present day. There is talk at the present moment of a few running the concern, and*. , having it at Johnsonville. Now, sir, as the late sport was a great supporter of the Wellington Trotting Club, I would suggest that they take it up at once for the 24th (Queen’s Birthday). Nothing of much importance coming on that date,' I am sure it would result in a handsome sum for the widow and children—seven,-1 believe, in number. I have spoken to several horse-owners who would give their support, and be willing to take a less prizey even one-half. The stewards may say the time is short; but not a bit of it. Therdis no fear of it then dragging. I would suggest a little alteration in their programme, as the above would then bring in more local horses, as follows:—Maiden Race (saddle'or harness), <£lo ; Pony Race (saddle or harness') 14 hands andpnder, .£lO ; Handicap Saddle, three miles, £3O; Handicap Harness, two miles, £25; Electric Saddle, one mile, £10; Novice Race (saddle . . or harness) for horses never before started, and maiden riders, £10; Selling Race (saddle or harness), £lO, winner half proceeds of sale; nomination, 5 per cent.; acceptance, 5 per cent. • This would bring a good meeting and make no second money. I would give my support with several horses and would collect other nominations ; but there is no time to lose. The stewards would want to take it in hand at once. The programme appears in our advertising columns for the United Hunt Club’s Steeplechase Meeting, to take place on the Hutt Park course on July 13th. Nominations close on June'2lst. Messrs A. J. Taine and Co. offer the steeplechasers Langar and Mirth for sale by auction at 2 o’clock on Saturday. . On the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Autumn Meeting, the Easter Handi-' cap a -ron by Three Cheers, who. paid £3 17s. For the Autumn Handicap, the last race of the day, won by Riel, sixteen started. The race was run in the dark, and when entering the straight the thred leading horses fell, two being killed and the third injured. The riders escaped with a severe shaking. The night had so far advanced that persons from the grand stand did not notice the accident, and in, fact only saw the finish of- the race. Mr F. Lawry contemplates next session introducing a Bill to Parliament legalising’ racing sweeps in New Zealand. As, however, such legislation involves a auestidk of revenue the consent of the Crown would have to. be obtained before the second reading could take place. Carbine and the Novelette colt have arrived in good condition at Colombo, tn route, to England.
