LAND SETTLEMENT.
A suggestion has been made/to the Government by the Surveyor-General that an effort should be made to promote pettlement in the Chatham Islands under the land legislation of last session. The suggestion would apply both to private and native lands. The matter has been referred by Cabinet to the Minister of Lands to deal with.
Another portion of the Awarua Block is to be brought Into the market about six weeks hence. It is rural land situated some short distance north of Mangaweka township, for the sections in which such eager competition took place and such good prices were obtained rather more than three weeks ago. The rural sections will be offered under the optional system. • In all probability no more township sections in the Awarua will be put up until the winter is over.
Mr J. McKerrow, Government Land Purchase Inspector, who has been in the South for about six weeks past inspecting lands under offer to the Government nnder the Lands for Settlement Act, is at present in the Methven district, North Canterbury, looking at an estate there which is under offer. He has been through Otago and South Canterbury and is now on his way back to Wellington to attend a meeting of the Land. Purchase Board which is to be held here this week. There is a very large area of land in the South now under offer—the larger portion of it being in Canterbury, and a {good quantity also being situated-in Otago and MarlMcKerrow and: also by the several local valuers. ,
