Owing to the fear of the Japanese invasion, tho Chinese in the southern part cf Formosa are to the northern portion of the island, which is garrisoned by 50,000 experienced, well-found and wellarmed troops. The Chinese at Haicheng fired on Japanese who held the flag of truce with the view of communicating in regard to the armistice. Five transport vessels, crowded with cavalry and infantry, left the seaport o' Shimonoseki, in Japan, before the armistic© was arranged. Additional booms and torpedoes have been laid for the protection of Swatow an I Canton. Shanghai, April 6. It is reported that Li Hung Chang h.is stopped the peace negotiations owing to the retention of Port Arthur by tLe Japanese. Shanghai, April 8. Japan claims that China should open for trade with the world districts of 1000 square miles in extent which contaia 200,000,000 people. She also claims the cession of Formosa, and Southern Manchuria (including Po: b Arthur), the independence of Corea and an indemnity of 2,000,000 francs.

London, April 8. The Times considers the terms imposed by Japan upon China are reasonable. Yokohama, April 7. Li Hung 1 Chang has recovered from the ■wound recently inflicted by a Japanese fanatic.
