Pressure on our space compels us to hold over several news items and some correspondence. In our advertising columns this week appear a list of the winning numbers in the great art union recently held in connection with St. Patrick’s Cathedral Fair, Melbourne.
A beautiful residential property, Easter Duddington Lodge, near Edinburgh, Scotland, is advertised for sale. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were concluded on the 13th. There were 24 cases on the calendar, true bills j being found in 21 of them. In all there , were 29 persons tried, of whom 11 were acquitted, a nolle prosequi being entered ) against four others. The other 12 were convicted and received sentences ranging from four months to three years. The Premier was interviewed on the 13th at Palmerston by Mr Fred Pirani, M.H.R., in reference to the removal of the old Courthouse buildings, and stated he will visit Palmerston on Friday to ascertain what alterations are necessary. At the meeting of the general committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association on the 13th it was decided to accept the offer of the Union Steamship Company of a room for an office in their buildings, with the use of the board room for general meetings at an annual rental of .£34. The first shipment of live sheep ever sent from New Zealand to London is just reaching the Home market by the Buteshire. It consists of 120 wethers, which were selected as a fair sample of ordinary good freezers. The shipment was on the joint account of Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. and the ship. The Banffshire, now about to sail, has on board 250 heavy wethers on the joint account of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company and the ship. It is to be hoped that success will attend these pioneer shipments. In another column appears an advertisement of the various products sold by the Odams’ Manure and Chemical Co., Limited, of London. The company manufacture poisonous and non-poisonous sheep dips and fluid and powder (non-poisonsonousj disinfectants for house use, all of which enjoy an excellent reputation and are largely used in the United Kingdom, America and Australia. The wholesale agents for this colony are named at the foot of the advertisement.
The ceremony of opening the new bridge over the Kai Iwi Stream at Tokomaru West was performed on Tuesday by Mr James Laird, chairman of the Waitotara County Council. There was a representative attendance of settlers. The total cost of the bridge—which is 80ft in length—including architect’s fee and approaches, is £340. Mr Laird said the settlers were very much indebted to Messrs Ashton and John Campbell for the energetic manner in which they went about the task of raising the loan.
Before the Chief Justice in Chambers last Wednesday, Mr Tripp filed a petition that Ernest Frederick Hawke should be adjudged bankrupt, and moved that a telegraph warrant be issued for his arrest, so that he might be kept in custody until he could find sureties that he would appear when required. The order was made for Hawke’s arrest, and telegraphed to Auckland, as it is belioved Hawke intends to leave that city for Australia. The application was made on behalf of the Phoenix Company, of Dunedin, for whom Hawke acted as Wellington agent.
