RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

MANAWATU RACING CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING. By Telegraph. — Own Reporter. Palmerston North, February 26. The weather was fine with a strong wind blowing for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting. The attendance numbered nearly a thousand people. The management of the meeting was excellent, and the starting of Mr E. W. Wood was well performed. The betting on the totalisator was very active, the sum of .£3885 being handled by Mr Frank Hill and his assistants. After the finish of the hack race, the stewards held an enquiry into the riding of Wheriko. The owner (Mr W. Douglas) and the trainer (James Munn) were exonerated from any blame with regard to the horse's running, and the enquiry was then adjourned until the evening, when Lindsay was disqualified for two months. Palmerston North, February 27. The weather was beautifully fine for the concluding day's raeing of the Manav watu Racing Club's meeting, and the attendance was fully up to that of the first day, numbering about 1000. The management of the meeting was again excellent. The .sum of .£3039 was put through the totoalisator, making a total of .£7924 for the meeting, or an increase of .£376 over the total for the corresponding meeting last year. Mr Murtagh's starting machine was used in four races; and although the results were not entirely satisfactory, it was the general opinion that the official starter was not thoroughly conversant with the manipulation of the apparatus, and that after the mix up in the first race he was inclined to keep the horses too far back from the barrier in the subsequent races. Under these circumstances it was thought that the machine had not received a fair trial. Fitzherbert Handicap, seven furlongs. 57 Mr J. M. Fraser's b c Allan-a-dale, 4yrs, Bst ... ... ... Mutfagh's starting machine was used for this race, but probably through the horses being too close to the net barrier, Zanella got some portion of her bridle hooked up in the net, and became entangled in it, carrying the netting away, wnile King's Bowman jumped round. Thus the start was very straggling. Allan-a-dale won all out by a length. Time, lmin 30 2-ssec. Dividend, £7 4s. Second Hurdle Handicap, one mile and three-quarters. 124 Mr Lemon's br h Osman, lOst 131 b (A.
