THE FANCIER.

POULTRY SOCIETY.

.; The twelfth annual meeting of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society was held in Towhsend and Paul's auctionrooms last week, Mr A. de B. Brandon ' (president) in the chair. There was a re- " presentative attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet, '"■' which were taken as read, showed that -within the year the hank overdraft has ( r been reduced from .£lO4 Is to .£35 8s Id, and the Society was in a perfectly sound financial position, with better prospects ''■:, than at any previous period. The annual ■ ; show was highly successful. In addition to the local pigeon and canaries societies, the existence of which will strengthen the Society, the committee noted with pleasure the establishment of the New Zealand Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association, to which nine societies are now '■■ affiliated—Wellington, Christchurch, South ' Canterbury, Dunedin, Auckland; Auckland ; Suburban, Sydenham, Ashburton and Nelson. The next championship "meeting ~ was to be held in Wellington next .July,; and the committee asked local breeders and fanciers to ensure large entries and make : the show a success. The committee thanked Lord Glasgow for opening the last exhibition; also acknowledged the services rendered by the president (Mr Brandon); : and gave thanks to the subscribers to the show fund, the donors of special prizes, the fudges, Jupp's Band and the Garrison Band. The committee congratulated the Society on what had been done, and on the , prospects for tha future. The new com- " mittee should have no difficulty in clearing off all the present liabilities, and establish- "■<;. ing the Society in a perfectly safe, healthy ; and prosperous condition. The Chairman, in proposing the adoption .of the report and balance-sheet, said the Society was to be congratulated on the satisfactory position of its affairs. The overdraft had been reduced during the year from .£lO4. Is to .£35 8s Id, and there was at present a balance of assets over liabilities of .£213 lis lid. There was an omission from the report as to Mr . Tolhurst's prize for the best kept poultry yard, the examination in connection with which was being carried out by Mr J. Doyle, and would be completed by the end of June. Competitions of this kind could ..':. not fail to lead to good results. It had been! decided to hold the next champion "'% poultry show in Wellington. The motion was seconded by Mr W. Hales. . ' Mr Townsend said the committee were I: to be congratulated on the success of the last show. The report and balance-sheet were so satisfactory that comment was un- ; necessary. \ The report and balance-sheet were then adopted. ; / The Chairman proposed Mr C.M.Luke > * as president for the ensuing year, and in doing so took occasion to thank the Society for the honour conferred upon him by electing him president last year. He suggested that in connection with shows of this kind, where a good deal of bitterness is sometimes caused by what is considered favouritism on the part of the judges, it would be well to get stuffed birds as near as possible to the English standards, and have these exhibited in some public place, where they could be examined from time to time. The exhibitors would thus have ; the standards before them up to which it would be necessary for them to breed. • This arrangement, if adopted, would be very convenient for fanciers, and be a 'S source of information for the judges. ' Mr Townsend suggested that as Mr : " Brandon had proved so successful a president he should accept office again. : t Mr Brandon, however, declined to do so, •but intimated his willingness to be nominated as one of the vice-presidents. ' Mr Luke waß then unanimously elected ' of the remaining officers resulted as followa :-Vice-presidents, MessW
