FEATHERSTON.
Feathebston, February 7. The usual monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present Commissioners James Donald (chairman), J. G. Cox, E. Cundy, W. Hodder, jun. An apology for non-attend-ance J through sickness was received from Mr W. Benton. The treasurer’s statement showed the amount of overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand as .£sl Is lOd. Accounts amounting to .£9 15s 4d were passed for payment. Permission to use gravel out of the old ballast pit was received from the Railway Department. The Chairman reported that the Road Board had authorised its engineer to lay off the cemetery afresh. After the business of the Town Board was concluded, the Board resolved itself into the Domain Board. The treasurer reported a credit . balance of £l4 9s Bd, and rent due £6. Accounts amounting to £l3 13s were passed for payment. Mr Hodder reported that good progress had been made with the grubbing of the gorse and briar. It was resolved that the clerk should ask Mr W. Donald to put the fence in order. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs J. G. Cox (chairman), W. Fry, W. J. Spackman, T. Worsley and C. Kent-Johnston, hon. secretary. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £2 7s Id. Accounts amounting to £2 9s 6d were passed for payment. The head master’s report showed 178 out of 215 children as present. The secretary was requested to forward the notices required by the Act relating to irregular attendance. The capitation grant, £7 14s, was received from the Education Board. Messrs J. R. Blair, J. 11. Shine, J. Robertson, R. Davis and F. Venn and Dr Newman wrote giving their ' views on educational matters. It was resolved to support Messrs Blair, Bradey and Shine. The secretary was requested to draw the, attention of the Education Board to the dilapidated state of the roof of the wash- * house behind the headmaster’s residence.
Yesterday afternoon I was shown a monster eel caught near Mr J. Murphy’s. It measured sft long, and weighed over 291 b. To-ddy, as Mr and Mrs C. Kent-Johnston were riding to Grey town, Mr Kent-John-ston’s horse started to jib, and succeeded in getting its rider off, and the saddle, too, without the girth becoming unfastened. The rider was a bit shaken, but was able to saddle up again and resume his journey. Feathebston, February 11. The usual monthly meeting of the Loyal Unity Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held on Saturday evening. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £57 10s. The resignation of Bro. Barton as trustee was accepted with regret, and a resolution passed putting on record the high appreciation felt of his past services to the lodge. Bro. E. Cox was elected trustee in his stead, and Bro. Cox’s resignation as treasurer was accepted, and Bio. C. Kent-Johnston elected to that office. Another of the cup matches took place here on Saturday, when Grey town second and Featherston played off. The game resulted in a win for the home team by 93 runs. As the lessee of the Town Hall has failed to, comply with the provisions of his lease, the Town Board have taken over the hall. I!hey intend to run it themselves.
