"VVo understand that it is not true, as statod in a Sydney telegram tlio other day, that the Now Zealand Government have made any proposal in rospect of the Vancouver mail service. But Messrs I-luddart, Parker and Co., tho contractor's for the servico, have offered to run a connecting steamer from Fiji to either Auckland or Wellington, at tho option of the contractor. Tho Government, however, desire if possible to arrango for the through mail steamers to call at Now Zealand, and it would only bo in tho evont of failure to effect such an arrangement that consideration would be given to tho proposal for a connecting servico. If such a sorvico woro inaugurated, advantage might at any rate bo taken of it to dovelop our existing trade with Fiji and Samoa.
